Description

Study Programme

A large majority of cultural heritage properties in the world, particularly in the Arab States, are archaeological sites. Many of them are faced with severeproblems arising from the lack of integrative conservation and management strategies, poor or often inexistent interpretation concepts, and an acute lack of qualified personnel in their administration. The Joint Master's programme in Heritage Conservation and Site Management which was developed by Helwan University (Egypt) and BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg (Germany) within the framework of the German-Arab Transformations Partnership Programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), aims to train experts who will respond to these specific threats.

The curriculum is focused on transferring knowledge and skills necessary for the assessment, protection and management of archaeological sites, and includes the following academic fields: conservation strategies and methods, heritage site management and strategic planning, presentation and interpretation, tourism and visitor management. Students will have the opportunity to study at least one semester at the partner university. With the support of the project partners (German Archaeological Institute and Egyptian Ministry of State for Antiquities), they will also able to conduct field work on various sites in Egypt and Germany.
