Description

Universities

On the German side, the Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology (IALT) is one of the top institutes in the field of T&I training and research. It is the only university institute in Germany which meets the quality criteria of the European Commission’s EMT (European Masters' in Translation) as well as those of CIUTI (www.ciuti.org), an organization with only 43 members all over the world. IALT’s partner, the Oriental Institute (OIL) of the University of Leipzig has an excellent reputation in the field of German-Arabic technical communica-tion. On the Egyptian side, the Faculty of Languages of Ain Shams University in Cairo has the biggest German Department of all Egyptian universities and is the best known educational institution for Arabic/German translators in Egypt, with an outstanding reputation in the Arab world.

Study Programme

This new binational double-degree Master’s programme on Arabic/German Specialized Translation is a joint project by University of Leipzig and Ain Shams University of Cairo. It bundles the best competencies of all partner institutes. It accounts for recent political, socio-cultural and economical developments in the Arab world which will eventually result in a growing demand for well-trained translators. In the light of traditionally good business relations between Arabic speaking countries and Germany, the programmes’ restriction to the language pair German and Arabic, combined with a focus on intercultural technical communication and state-of-the-art translation tools, ensures a high degree of employability. The implementation of the programme is supported and funded by DAAD.
